VECCHIARELLI SHARPENING

 As early as the 19th century in the village of Guardiaregia, in the Molise Province of Italy, my forefathers honed the skill of sharpening various kinds of blades, including scissors, knifes, and scythes using a stone grinding wheel. They were known as “Mola le Forbici” throughout the region and were able to support their families very well plying their trade. They serviced the region far and wide until they learned of the opportunities available in America the early 20th century.

 My great grandfather and grandfather left their families and traveled to America during the Great Migration to provide their families with additional resources. They had learned from fellow countrymen of the opportunities for their skills in the thriving Garment Center in New York City. So off they went to be part of the American Dream.In his later years, after retiring as an accountant, my father became part of the heritage of the family. He served the garment industry until he was 75 years old. My father passed his love of the trade onto me. 

When I graduated from college, I decided to continue in the family business, making me the fourth generation of Vecchiarelli’s to serve as a scissor sharpener. For the past 30 years, I have sharpening scissors, pattern shears, pinking shears, knives, and other tools used by the New York garment industry.  I love my job and the people I meet every day!  It is an honor to carry on my family’s heritage.
